The University of Southampton Malaysia (UoSM) proudly announces the establishment of the Blockchain, Fintech, and Cryptocurrency Research Group (BFCRG) in March 2024, marking a significant milestone in the university’s commitment to cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research.

The group is led by Ts Dr Mohammad Dalvi Esfahani, with Dr Sagaya Amalathas serving as Deputy Lead. The founding members include Dr Mahmoud Khattab, Dr Rajesh Yadav, and Dr Nasrin Azar—each contributing specialized expertise in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, financial reporting, and more.
BFCRG is a dynamic and pioneering team dedicated to exploring the transformative potential of blockchain technology, financial technology (Fintech), and cryptocurrencies. The group’s mission is to advance knowledge and drive innovation in these rapidly evolving fields, with a focus on practical applications across sectors such as finance, supply chain, and healthcare.
Key areas of research include:
- Blockchain applications in real-world systems
- Fintech solutions and their impact on financial ecosystems
- The role of cryptocurrencies in future economies
- Smart contracts and decentralized finance (DeFi)
- Regulatory, security, and adoption frameworks
The group is aligned with national and global agendas including Malaysia’s Shared Prosperity Vision 2030, 10-10 MySTIE Framework, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals—namely:
- SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure
- SDG 13: Climate Action
- SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions
